And this tradition can be traced back to some very early references to a gospel by Matthew in 'the language of Hebrews'. So until the end of the nineteenth century, the First Gospel was attributed to Matthew.  However, a more scientific study of the three synoptic gospels showed us that the question is not quite so simple. Fr. Bill Yeomans (1925-1989) was a member of the editorial team which founded The Way. He was one of those who, from the 1960s onwards, applied the new movements in the Church - biblical, liturgical, theological - to the spiritual life.
