Matthew's gospel usually heads the list of the three synoptic gospels because he was an eye-witness from the beginning. And this tradition can be traced back to some very early references to a gospel by Matthew in 'the language of Hebrews'. So until the end of the nineteenth century, the First Gospel was attributed to Matthew.
However, a more scientific study of the three synoptic gospels showed us that the question is not quite so simple.
